About this position
The University of Oslo invites applications for a three-year PhD Research Fellowship in Planetary Atmospheric Chemistry using Quantum Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry’s Section for Theoretical Chemistry. The position is based at the Life Science Building at Blindern, Oslo, Norway, within the Research Council of Norway-funded project Molecular Atmospheric Chemistry on Alien Worlds (MACAW).
The project uses quantum chemistry, electronic structure methods, high-performance computing, and molecular simulations to investigate chemical reactions, photochemistry, reaction rates, UV-Vis spectra, condensation mechanisms, and spectral signatures in planetary and exoplanetary atmospheres. Particular emphasis is placed on sulfur and chlorine chemistry and isotopic fractionation. The successful candidate will have flexibility to pursue specific research topics in coordination with the supervisor and will participate in an internationally collaborative research network spanning seven nations and four continents.
Applicants should hold a relevant Master’s degree in chemistry, physics, nanoscience, or a related field and demonstrate experience with quantum chemistry calculations, molecular simulations, programming or scripting, and HPC resources. Knowledge of DFT, coupled-cluster or multireference methods, chemical kinetics, reaction mechanisms, photochemistry, spectroscopy, atmospheric chemistry, physical chemistry, or planetary science is advantageous. Applicants are expected to have strong academic records, English communication skills, research motivation, independence, precision, and collaborative ability.
The fellowship pays NOK 550,800–595,000 depending on qualifications and experience, less a 2% pension contribution, and includes Norwegian State Pension Fund benefits and university welfare provisions. The application deadline is 22 November 2026, with a starting date as soon as possible and no later than 1 March 2027. Applications must include a motivation letter, CV, academic diplomas and transcripts, English-language documentation, publication list, and details for two or three references.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in chemistry, physics, nanoscience, or a related field, corresponding to at least four years in the Norwegian educational system. Applicants should have fluent oral and written English, experience using computational resources and code for molecular-property simulations, quantum chemistry calculations, scripting or programming such as Python, Bash, Matlab, or Fortran, and high-performance computing experience. Desired qualifications include experience with electronic structure methods such as DFT, coupled-cluster, or multireference methods; knowledge of chemical kinetics, reaction mechanisms, photochemistry, spectroscopy, transition-state theory, atmospheric chemistry, or physical chemistry; and insight into planetary or exoplanetary science and photochemical atmospheric modeling. The expected academic standard is at least a C average in Bachelor's courses, a B average in Master's courses, and a B or better for the Master's thesis under the Norwegian grading system. Applicants must provide approved documentation of English proficiency where required and demonstrate research motivation, independence, collaboration, precision, adaptability, and interest in atmospheric, planetary, or exoplanetary science.
