About this position
The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), through the Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science (KBM), is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow in photobiocatalysis and AI-based protein design. The three-year, full-time position is located at the NMBU campus in Ås, Norway, with a possible extension to four years including teaching.
The project aims to design entirely new enzymes that use light to drive selective chemical reactions in water under mild conditions, reducing reliance on rare metals and organic solvents. The researcher will combine quantum chemistry and generative AI models to design cofactor-binding proteins, engineer proteins around target active-site geometries, and experimentally test the designs.
Research activities span molecular biology, recombinant protein expression and purification, protein chemistry, computational protein design, quantum chemistry, spectroscopy, LC-MS, NMR, EPR, crystallization and protein X-ray crystallography. The project has access to robotic cloning and purification, LC-MS, UV-vis, EPR, crystallization facilities, regular synchrotron beam time at MAX IV and ESRF, and Sigma2 HPC infrastructure. Collaboration will involve research communities in organic synthesis, protein technology and spectroscopy.
Applicants need a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or structural biology and documented experience in computational chemistry or a related field, biochemical and molecular biology laboratory methods, protein crystallography, spectroscopy, computational methods and AI-based models on HPC clusters. Preferred experience includes generative protein design, structure prediction, quantum chemical or QM/MM calculations, molecular dynamics, metalloproteins, redox enzymes, flavoproteins, photochemistry, enzyme kinetics, LC-MS analysis or laboratory automation. Applications should include a motivation letter, complete CV, relevant qualifications, up to three scientific works and two referees. The deadline is 15 November 2026.

What's required
A PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or structural biology, with experience in computational chemistry or a similar field, is required. Applicants must have documented experience in biochemical and molecular biology laboratory work, including cloning, recombinant protein expression and protein purification; X-ray crystallography of proteins; spectroscopic methods; computational methods; and AI-based models on HPC clusters. Strong written and spoken English is required. Applicants who have submitted their doctoral thesis for assessment by the deadline may apply, but the doctorate must be awarded before starting. Preferred qualifications include generative protein design, all-atom structure prediction, quantum-chemical calculations, molecular dynamics or QM/MM methods, experience with metalloproteins, redox enzymes, flavoproteins or photochemistry, and experience with enzyme kinetics, LC-MS product analysis or laboratory automation. The role also requires scientific curiosity, initiative, systematic and efficient independent and collaborative work, and good communication skills.
How to apply
Apply electronically through the “Apply for the position” link on the Jobbnorge advertisement. Submit a motivation letter, complete CV entered in the Jobbnorge CV form, relevant diplomas and certificates, up to three key scientific works, and contact details for two referees.
