About this position
The University of Oslo invites applications for a three-year, full-time PhD Research Fellow in Political Science at the ARENA Centre for European Studies in Oslo, Norway. The successful candidate will develop an independent doctoral project on Norway’s relationship with the European Union, examining European integration and its consequences for countries inside and outside the EU.
Projects may address Norway’s association model, the EEA Agreement, Norwegian political institutions and public administration, regulatory alignment, democratic legitimacy, influence and room for manoeuvre vis-à-vis the EU, or the evolution of Norway’s relationship as the EU changes. Research on justice and home affairs is also welcome, including Schengen, migration and asylum policy, border management, and police and judicial cooperation. Comparative projects involving Iceland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, EU member states or candidate countries are particularly encouraged, although single-case studies of Norway and comparisons across policy areas are also eligible.
Applicants should propose theoretically informed, empirically grounded research using a clear and feasible design. A relevant master’s degree worth 120 ECTS, top-tier academic results, research-design and methodology training, and a 30-ECTS master’s thesis are required. Excellent English is essential; Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is advantageous. The position has no compulsory teaching duties and requires presence at ARENA in Oslo.
The role offers a salary of NOK 550,800–630,000, access to office facilities and research resources, welfare benefits, and membership of the Norwegian State Pension Fund. Applications must include a cover letter, Jobbnorge CV, project description, transcripts, writing samples, publication list, and two to three references. The application deadline is 13 December 2026.
