PhD Research Fellow in Topological Data Analysis University of Bergen in Norway

University of Bergen (UiB), Department of Mathematics, is advertising a PhD Research Fellow in Topological Data Analysis. The position is part of the Lie-Størmer Center and specifically associated with WP4 – Topology, Algebra, and Geometry for Complex Data Analysis. It is a full-time, temporary PhD fellowship for 3 years, with the possibility of a 4th year involving career-promoting work such as teaching, dissemination, or research infrastructure services.

The research project focuses on developing mathematical and computational methods in topological data analysis, with emphasis on multiparameter persistence and its application to medical data. The work combines theoretical mathematics with algorithm design and implementation for medical image analysis. The successful candidate will investigate computational complexity, stability, and numerical summaries of multiparameter persistence, while contributing to the research environment of the Lie-Størmer Center and the Mathesis international doctoral school.

The broader center brings together researchers working on the interaction between algebra, differential geometry, analysis, computational mathematics, and applications to data science and computational dynamics. It is jointly hosted by the University of Bergen and UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and aims to bridge pure and computational mathematics within Norway and across European research networks.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent in mathematics. Master’s students may apply if they will complete their final master’s examination before 31 December 2026, but the degree must be officially awarded before employment begins. A background in algebraic topology and topological data analysis is required. Experience with scientific programming or algorithm development is advantageous, as are strong English skills, independence, structured working habits, and good collaboration.

Funding: the fellowship is funded by the University of Bergen as a contribution to the Lie-Størmer Center. The advertised salary is NOK 593,700 per year before taxes, with standard pension membership and welfare benefits. A 4th year may be granted depending on qualifications and departmental teaching needs.
