PhD Research Fellowship in Political Science and War Studies University of Oslo in Norway

Call for applications for a PhD Research Fellowship in Political Science at the University of Oslo, Norway, within the ERC-funded WOW (Waging of War) project.

The project examines how wars are organized and conducted, how military and non-state armed groups are structured, and how war dynamics shape organizational change. The fellowship is ideal for candidates interested in political science, international relations, conflict studies, war studies, political violence, quantitative analysis, formal analysis, game theory, and data-driven research on armed groups.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in Political Science, IR, or a related field, with strong training in research methods or game theory, excellent English, and strong quantitative or formal analytical skills. Programming skills (R, Python), machine learning/LLM experience, and additional languages are listed as advantages.

The fellowship runs for 3–4 years and offers a salary of NOK 550,800–595,000 per year, annual salary increases, and research funding of about NOK 35,000 per year. The position includes an international research environment, career development, and training in Oslo.
