About this position

Ghent University, a leading European institution, is offering a fully funded PhD position in next-generation WiFi chip design on Software-Defined Radio within the renowned IDLab research group, part of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. IDLab is a core research group of imec, specializing in connectivity, data science, and artificial intelligence, and collaborates extensively with academic and industry partners worldwide. The research team for this position focuses on Intelligent Wireless Networking, addressing real-world challenges in wireless systems for professional applications where stable quality of service, bounded latency, and guaranteed packet delivery are essential.

The successful candidate will join the Software-Defined Radio team to develop innovative solutions for improving Wi-Fi performance and efficiency. Research topics include enhancing WiFi design for distributed MIMO and coordinated multi-AP operation, contributing to Wi-Fi 8 standardization efforts. The work involves using Hardware Description Language on FPGA platforms, leveraging the open-source openwifi project (openwifi), and designing higher networking layer functionality and drivers in Linux environments. The project combines theoretical design with experimental validation, including prototyping in IDLab’s advanced test labs and considering use cases such as industry 4.0, mission-critical applications, and professional multimedia.

Throughout the PhD, you will publish and present research at international conferences and in scientific journals, participate in national and European research projects, and collaborate with industry partners. Limited educational tasks within the research group are also expected. The position offers a full-time doctoral fellowship for up to 48 months, with an initial 12-month contract extendable upon positive evaluation. Applicants must hold (or be close to completing) a Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, Information Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication, or a related field. Essential qualifications include a strong theoretical background in MIMO, Information Theory, Signal and Systems, Modulation and Detection, and experience with OFDM or single carrier baseband algorithms. Familiarity with at least one Hardware Description Language and FPGA programming is required; hands-on experience with Vivado, knowledge of C/C++, and understanding of Wi-Fi standards (especially MIMO or OFDMA) are advantageous. Fluency in English is mandatory.
