About this position
PhD Early-Stage Researcher Position in Biology and Fish Cardiac Physiology
Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), Estonia, invites applications for a four-year PhD project in the Laboratory of Systems Biology investigating how genetics and diet influence rainbow trout heart and cardiomyocyte morphology. The research will help identify factors contributing to cardiac abnormalities in farmed salmonid fish and support evidence-based guidelines for producing more robust fish.
The doctoral researcher will assess morphology at whole-heart and cellular scales using histology, immunocytochemistry, microscopy, tissue preparation, and quantitative image analysis. The project will connect structural observations with cardiac performance and metabolism measurements generated by a collaborating PhD student. Responsibilities include independent experimental planning, data analysis, scientific publications, conference presentations, student supervision, and limited participation in routine fish husbandry through a shared weekend rota.
Applicants should hold an M.Sc. in biology or a related discipline, have practical experimental research experience, demonstrate C1 or C2 English proficiency, and be prepared to work with live fish. Experience in cardiac morphology, comparative anatomy, cell biology, histology, antibody-based imaging, microscopy, image analysis, statistics, animal handling, or fish husbandry is advantageous but not required in every area.
The position offers a minimum gross monthly salary of EUR 2,300 for four years, project-specific training, conference opportunities, and collaboration within TalTech’s interdisciplinary environment spanning biology, physics, biophysics, and applied mathematics. Applications are accepted from 15 October 2026 to 24 November 2026. Apply through the Teamdash portal and consult the TalTech PhD Admission page for process details.
