About this position
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Health Tech invites applications for a three-year PhD scholarship in 3D cochlear histopathology in ageing and systemic disease, based in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.
The project will investigate spatial and temporal relationships between vascular and sensorineural pathology in the cochlea during healthy ageing and in age-related conditions including dementia and metabolic syndrome. The doctoral researcher will develop preclinical immunolabelling and tissue-clearing protocols, perform whole-organ imaging with light-sheet fluorescence microscopy, and contribute to quantitative image-analysis pipelines.
The PhD researcher will join the Centre for Auditory Neuroscience within DTU Health Tech's Hearing Systems section. The interdisciplinary team includes neurobiologists, cognitive neuroscientists, acousticians, computer scientists, and medical doctors. Responsibilities include experimental work in rodent models, microscopy-data acquisition and evaluation, quantitative assessment of cochlear pathology, interpretation of findings in relation to auditory function and disease markers, scientific publication, conference presentations, and teaching or supervision. The programme includes 30 ECTS of coursework and a three- to six-month research stay at a partner laboratory.
Applicants need a two-year master's degree or equivalent in neuroscience, medicine, biomedicine, veterinary medicine, biomedical engineering, molecular biology, or a related discipline. Research experience with laboratory rodents, immunofluorescent tissue labelling, fluorescence microscopy, and quantitative analysis is required. Interest in inner-ear pathology, careful laboratory practice, rigorous documentation, independence, and strong English communication are essential. Auditory-system knowledge and experience with tissue clearing, light-sheet microscopy, or image analysis are advantageous.
The appointment lasts three years and is expected to start on 1 March 2027 or by agreement. Salary follows the Danish collective agreement for scientific staff. Applications must be submitted online by 25 November 2026 at 23:59 Danish time as one English-language PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, diplomas, and grading-scale information. Up to two recommendation letters are optional.

What's required
Applicants must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in neuroscience, medicine, biomedicine, veterinary medicine, biomedical engineering, molecular biology, or a related field. Required qualifications include hands-on laboratory-rodent experience in research; practical experience with immunofluorescent tissue labelling and optimization of tissue-processing protocols; experience acquiring and evaluating fluorescence microscopy data; demonstrated quantitative-analysis ability through scripting, image analysis, statistics, or equivalent training; strong interest in inner-ear pathology; ability to formulate research questions and work independently; meticulous handling of delicate preparations; rigorous experimental documentation; strong written and spoken English; and effective collaboration in an interdisciplinary research environment. Familiarity with the auditory system or inner-ear biology and experience with tissue clearing, light-sheet microscopy, or image analysis are advantageous. Applicants may apply before receiving the master's degree but must obtain it before starting.
