About this position
This PhD stipend at Aalborg University offers an exciting opportunity to join the Electrochemistry Research Group within the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience. The project focuses on the fundamental understanding of the coupling between nanomaterial surfaces and enzymatic bioelectrochemistry, utilizing electrochemistry to drive redox reactions catalyzed by enzymes. This research has broad applications, including biosensors, biofuel cells, and biosynthesis for 'power-to-X' technologies.
The successful candidate will engage in nanomaterials-based electrode fabrication, synthesis of redox-active polymers, enzyme immobilization, electrochemical characterization, and surface analysis using a wide range of techniques. Key research areas include bioelectrochemical regeneration of NADH cofactors for reductive biocatalysis and nitrogenase bioelectrochemistry, contributing to ongoing externally funded projects within the group. The project aims to advance knowledge on efficient bioelectrosynthesis as a practical solution for real-world challenges.
In addition to research, the PhD candidate will participate in teaching and supervision activities, mainly involving student project supervision. The department is a vibrant research and educational institution with approximately 150 employees, 75 PhD students, and 775 bachelor and master’s students across campuses in Aalborg and Esbjerg. The work culture emphasizes openness, curiosity, transparency, and inclusivity, with flexible hours and social activities throughout the year.
Applicants should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration, particularly in polymer chemistry and biocatalysis. A Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, electrochemistry, materials science, biochemistry, or a closely related field is required. Experience with nanomaterials, bioelectrochemistry, electrochemistry, photochemistry, analytical chemistry, and/or spectroscopy is advantageous. English proficiency is essential, while Danish language skills are not required.
The PhD stipend is for three years, with salary and terms of employment governed by the AC collective agreement. Enrollment at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science is mandatory, and candidates must complete PhD courses (30 ECTS), gain teaching experience, and undertake an external research stay (preferably 3-6 months) at a foreign institution. The application process includes shortlisting and assessment by qualified experts, and all applicants will be notified of their status.
