About this position

Aalborg University’s Department of Materials and Production is advertising a 3-year PhD stipend in Models of Defects and Qubits in Two-Dimensional Materials. The project sits within the doctoral programme Materials Science, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and is part of the Center for Classical Communication in the Quantum Era (CLASSIQUE).

The research is centered on quantum materials, two-dimensional systems, and physics-based modelling and simulation. The project topics include modelling the electronic properties of 2D materials using ab initio and semi-empirical methods, studying the effects of electric and magnetic fields, modelling defects and qubits in two-dimensional materials, and simulating coherence and entanglement of qubits. The work is interdisciplinary and connects physics, materials science, and quantum information science.

Applicants should have an M.Sc. degree in physics, materials engineering, technical physics, or a related field. The post asks for strong physics and analytical skills, programming experience (for example Python or Matlab), and familiarity with the basic concepts of quantum information and quantum computing. Experience with quantum simulators such as NetSquid is a plus. The department also values curiosity, collaboration, and readiness to work across disciplines.

The position is based in Aalborg, Denmark, starts on 1 August 2026 or soon thereafter, and has an application deadline of 27 April 2026. The appointment is for 3 years and includes standard PhD obligations such as coursework, teaching or knowledge dissemination, and an external research stay.

To apply, candidates must use Aalborg University’s recruitment system and submit an application, CV, diplomas, and a one-page research vision statement. Contact person: Thomas Garm Pedersen ([email protected]).
