About this position

This PhD stipend is offered at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Aalborg University, as part of the Centre for Quantum Communication Networks and Applications. The position focuses on multiparty computation in quantum networks, aiming to develop new cryptographic network protocols leveraging quantum resources such as entanglement and the no-cloning principle. The research seeks to improve privacy in distributed computation settings by integrating quantum information properties into secure multiparty computation protocols.

The successful candidate will collaborate with researchers from the CLASSIQUE Centre of Excellence at Aalborg University and the Centre for Quantum Communication Networks and Applications (QCNA), led by Simula UiB in Bergen, Norway. The CLASSIQUE Centre brings together expertise from electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, and computer science, focusing on the intersection of classical and quantum networks. QCNA is a Norwegian research centre with partners in Scandinavia and Japan, dedicated to designing secure quantum communication protocols and exploring applications of quantum resources in network settings.

During the PhD studies, the candidate will be expected to contribute to theoretical research, with occasional simulation work using quantum network simulators such as NetSquid or Q2NS. Teaching tasks, including lecturing or project supervision, are part of the position. The candidate should be creative, open-minded, and willing to engage in collaborations with both junior and senior researchers. Clear communication in English, both written and spoken, is essential. Participation in workshops and conferences is expected, as well as a mandatory external research stay abroad (preferably 3-6 months) to strengthen the research profile.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree and demonstrate a strong background in quantum networks or quantum information, or cryptography related to multiparty computation. Solid mathematical skills and the ability to formally analyse and prove properties of abstract systems and structures are required. Familiarity with both quantum information and cryptography is beneficial but not strictly required. Enrollment as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science is mandatory, with requirements including completion of PhD courses (30 ECTS), teaching experience, and an external research stay.

The stipend is open for appointment from 1st November 2026 or soon thereafter, with a duration of three years. Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement). The position includes a mutual probationary period of three months. Aalborg University is an international workplace, committed to diversity and real-world-oriented education, with campuses in Aalborg, Esbjerg, and Copenhagen.

To apply, submit your application, CV, diplomas, and other relevant documents via Aalborg University’s recruitment system under the job advertisement. The application should address your qualifications and research interests, and may include research ideas you wish to pursue. All applicants will be informed about shortlisting after the deadline. For questions, contact Associate Professor René Bødker Christensen at [email protected].
