About this position
Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), through the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) and its Department of Analytics, is offering a PhD position on Li, Sn, and W transport and enrichment in Variscan mineral systems.
This project is aimed at investigating the structural setting of known magmatic and magmatic-hydrothermal Li, Sn, and W deposits in the Variscan Orogen, identifying structural controls on ore-forming processes, and studying petrological constraints on alteration and mineralization. The successful candidate will also model metal transport by hydrothermal fluids and fluid-rock interaction, develop and test vectoring tools towards ore bodies, and communicate results through publications and presentations at meetings, workshops, and conferences.
The position is well suited to applicants with a strong background in geology or related fields, especially structural geology, economic geology, geochemistry, and mineralogy. Experience in magmatic or magmatic-hydrothermal mineral systems and field-based geological studies is particularly relevant. The role also values modelling experience related to fluid-rock interaction and magmatic processes, as well as strong teamwork, a structured and solution-oriented working style, and the ability to work in the field.
The appointment is embedded in a vibrant, international research environment with extensive professional networking opportunities and a structured PhD program. The offer includes salary and social benefits under the German public-sector collective agreement (TVöD-Bund), 30 days of paid holiday leave, a company pension scheme, flexible working arrangements, and other staff benefits. Depending on qualifications, the post may be graded up to salary group 13.
The position is located in Freiberg, Germany, and the application deadline is 2026-11-13. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, and other required materials via the online application system.

Relevant experience in magmatic and magmatic-hydrothermal mineral systems and field-based geological studies is expected. In-depth knowledge of structural geology is required, while knowledge of modelling techniques for fluid-rock interaction and magmatic processes is an advantage. Excellent English language skills are required; German, French, or Czech language skills are an advantage. Strong teamwork, structured and solution-oriented working style, ability to work in the field, and a driving license are advantageous.
