About this position
The Department of Chemistry for Life Sciences at Uppsala University is recruiting a PhD student for a project in analytical chemistry focused on developing novel methods for single-cell analysis and quantification using direct infusion mass spectrometry.
The project is centered on optimizing sampling and ionization probes for the sensitive detection of metabolites and lipids from individual cells, with the aim of studying cellular heterogeneity. The work combines custom-built analytical platforms with high-resolution mass spectrometry and spans the full analytical workflow, from cell culture and experimental design through data acquisition, molecular annotation, and data processing.
The doctoral researcher will also contribute to targeted tandem mass spectrometry method development and reactive chemistry strategies for confident analyte identification and quantification. The position offers opportunities to work across chemistry, biology, medicine, and information technology, and to develop innovative analytical methodologies for studying biological systems at high resolution.
The project is based in the research group of Prof. Ingela Lanekoff, whose work focuses on mass spectrometry imaging and single-cell mass spectrometry to uncover chemical processes underlying biological function and dysfunction. The group works in a strongly interdisciplinary environment with access to advanced infrastructure at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala and collaborations across life sciences and SciLifeLab.
