About this position
Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the Mass Spectrometry Technology Access Center (MTAC), a recharge facility within the McDonnell Genome Institute at WashU Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. MTAC supports regional, national, and international researchers with advanced proteomics and small-molecule analytical services.
The postdoctoral associate will focus on untargeted and targeted metabolomics and lipidomics. The work will involve designing and executing hypothesis-driven or discovery-oriented research plans across multiple biomedical service projects, with responsibility for sample preparation, mass-spectrometry experiments, data analysis, interpretation, and reporting. The researcher will contribute to robust untargeted workflows that use multiple databases and in-house libraries, as well as quantitative targeted assays using parallel reaction monitoring and Skyline or equivalent software.
The research environment provides access to multiple high-end Orbitrap and triple-quadrupole mass spectrometers, multidimensional liquid chromatography, and supporting laboratory equipment. The role also engages with bioinformatics workflows and emerging applications in small-molecule analysis. The postdoctoral researcher will develop and optimize methods, maintain and troubleshoot instruments, keep detailed experimental records, and help improve analytical outcomes.
In addition to conducting research, the associate will present data and interpretations in group meetings, communicate with collaborators, prepare reports, and contribute to manuscripts for peer-reviewed collaborative publications. The position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic, team-based research center while developing leadership, independent research, scientific writing, and presentation skills under the direction of center leadership and a faculty mentor.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree. Expertise in untargeted and targeted metabolomics/lipidomics is highly preferred, including experience building robust untargeted pipelines using multiple databases and in-house libraries, and developing quantitative targeted assays using PRM with Skyline or equivalent software. Familiarity with multidimensional liquid chromatography, bioinformatics workflows, and emerging small-molecule applications is preferred. Applicants should be able to work independently and collaboratively, design and execute experiments, analyze and interpret data, troubleshoot instruments and methods, communicate effectively, and prepare scientific reports and manuscripts. The position also requires the ability to work safely in a laboratory, wear protective equipment, and provide standard care to research animals.
