About this position

This fully funded PhD position at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) offers an exciting opportunity to work on the design and characterization of plasmonic metal oxide nanostructures. The research focuses on combining gold nanoparticles with semiconducting oxides such as ZnO and CuO to enhance optical absorption and opto-electronic performance. The project is part of a collaborative program between LIST and the Institut de Physique et Chimie des Matériaux de Strasbourg (IPCMS, France), leveraging expertise in atomic layer deposition (ALD), optical characterization, and physical modelling. The main objective is to understand and control how localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) in gold nanoparticles influence the optical and opto-electronic behavior of complex 3D nanostructures.

Key scientific challenges include achieving precise control over Au nanoparticle growth via thermal and plasma-enhanced ALD, and studying light–matter interactions in Au-decorated ZnO and CuO nanostructures using advanced optical and opto-electronic characterization techniques. The successful candidate will perform ALD growth of Au nanoparticles, characterize optical properties using UV–VIS–NIR spectroscopy, and investigate the opto-electronic response of fabricated devices.

The research environment is multidisciplinary and international, with access to state-of-the-art deposition, cleanroom, and characterization facilities. The PhD student will collaborate closely with a counterpart at IPCMS (Strasbourg) and participate in joint experiments and discussions during research visits. The position includes enrolment in the Doctoral Program in Physics and Materials Science (DPPM) at the University of Luxembourg, advanced training courses, and opportunities to present work at international conferences. The ideal candidate holds a Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, has a strong interest in thin film deposition and nanostructures, and is fluent in English.

The position offers a 3-year contract (with possible extension), 13-month salary, statutory health insurance, generous leave, flexible working hours, and a supportive, diverse research environment. Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled. Applicants must apply online and provide a motivation letter, CV, and references.

The project is co-supervised by LIST and Silviu Colis (IPCMS, Strasbourg).
