About this position
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Chemical Engineering invites applications for a three-year PhD position in polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) processing and modification by reactive extrusion in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.
The project will develop next-generation renewable PHA compounds through advanced polymer processing, formulation, compounding, and reactive extrusion. The research will examine relationships between formulation, processing history, polymer structure, and final material properties, with the goal of improving processability and performance.
The PhD student will prepare and process PHA formulations, investigate reactive processing and additive concepts, and evaluate materials for injection moulding, extrusion, and blow moulding. Work will combine offline characterization with online and in-line analytical methods to monitor processing and support adaptive control of composition and process conditions. Relevant methods include FTIR, rheology, DSC, TGA, NMR, and potentially Raman spectroscopy.
Applicants should hold, or be close to obtaining, a two-year master's degree equivalent to 120 ECTS credits. Practical polymer-processing experience, particularly extrusion or reactive extrusion, and knowledge of biopolymers, polymer formulation, compounding, and structure-property-processing relationships are expected. Experience with online analysis, process monitoring, injection moulding, film or profile extrusion, or blow moulding is advantageous. The role also involves independent experimental planning, interdisciplinary collaboration, teaching, and student supervision.
The appointment follows DTU and Danish academic collective-agreement terms. The PhD scholarship is subject to academic approval and enrollment in a DTU PhD programme. Applications in English must include a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts and diplomas, grading-scale information, and a table of processing, synthesis, and characterization experience.
Apply online by 24 November 2026 at 23:59 Danish time. Further information is available from Anders E. Daugaard at [email protected].

What's required
Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree of 120 ECTS credits or an equivalent degree at the academic level of a two-year master's degree; applicants may apply before receiving the master's degree but cannot start before obtaining it. Candidates should have practical experience in polymer processing, preferably extrusion or reactive extrusion, through master's studies or equivalent research; strong interest in biopolymers, polymer formulation, compounding, and structure-property-processing relationships; hands-on experience with polymer characterization including FTIR, rheology, DSC, TGA, and NMR; ability to plan experiments independently and collaborate across polymer chemistry, processing, and analytical disciplines; and interest in teaching and supervising student projects. Experience with Raman spectroscopy, online analysis, process monitoring, injection moulding, film or profile extrusion, or blow moulding is advantageous. Applications must be in English and include a motivation letter, CV, grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma with grading-scale description, and a table summarizing processing, synthesis, and characterization experience.
