About this position

European XFEL GmbH is offering a funded PhD position in the EXPLODE research group, focused on the microstructural dynamics of fusion targets. The project is part of the BMFTR-funded EXPLODE initiative (Experimental X-ray Platforms for Optimisation and Diagnosis of inertial fusion Energy), project code 13F1044, and is carried out together with the HED-HiBEF instrument.

The doctoral project centres on the development and application of X-ray imaging diagnostics for investigating laser-driven, fusion-relevant targets. The successful candidate will contribute to experimental data analysis and the creation of robust, well-documented workflows for evaluating X-ray imaging measurements. The role also includes support for the preparation, fabrication and characterisation of nanostructured targets, as well as participation in the planning, preparation and execution of experiments at European XFEL and other facilities, including beamtime applications.

Working closely with colleagues and external collaborators, the PhD student will be involved in experimental studies, simulations, data analysis and interpretation. Results are expected to be disseminated through internal reports, conferences, scientific publications, and a doctoral thesis.

The position is based at European XFEL GmbH in Schenefeld, Germany, and is offered as a part-time PhD position with 29.25 hours per week. The contract is temporary. The job description highlights a vibrant international environment, English as the company language, and a range of benefits including flexible working options, paid vacation, relocation support, training opportunities, and access to wellbeing and community resources.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline. Strong interest in X-ray imaging, laser-matter interaction, high energy-density physics, or fusion research is required, along with scientific programming and data analysis skills, preferably in Python. Practical interest in laboratory work, target fabrication, microscopy, and large-scale experimental facilities is also important. The posting notes that experience with large-scale user facility experiments, parallel computing, X-ray diagnostics, and materials characterisation would be beneficial. Excellent English is required.

Application deadline: 18 November 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Berlin). Candidates should apply via the European XFEL online portal and submit a CV, a motivation letter in English, and any reference letters.
