About this position

[Home tuition fees covered plus annual tax-free stipend (£20,780 for 2026/27), project costs budget (£9,000), conference budget (£2,000), and individual training budget (£1,000).]

This PhD studentship at the University of Exeter, offered through the NERC GW4+ Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), provides an exciting opportunity to investigate the influence of magma-mush processes on volcanic unrest. The GW4+ DTP is a collaboration between leading UK universities and research organisations, aiming to train future leaders in earth and environmental sciences. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research community and benefit from expert co-supervision from the University of Bristol and the British Geological Survey.

The project addresses the critical challenge of forecasting volcanic eruptions and mitigating associated risks, which affect approximately 10% of the global population. The research will focus on developing innovative numerical models to simulate surface deformation and seismicity resulting from magma migration and accumulation in magma-mush reservoirs. By integrating the latest understanding of magma-mush systems, the student will explore how subsurface stress and strain relate to patterns of volcanic earthquakes, applying these models to case-study volcanoes in regions such as Japan, the eastern Caribbean, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. Collaborations with local volcano observatories will be established during the first year of study.

Funding for eligible students includes coverage of home tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of £20,780 (for 2026/27), in line with UK Research and Innovation rates. Additional support includes a project costs budget of £9,000 for essential research expenses, a conference budget of £2,000, and an individual training budget of £1,000 for specialist skills development. The studentship is designed to provide comprehensive training in earth and environmental sciences, with opportunities for fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and international collaboration.

Applicants should possess a strong academic background in earth sciences, geology, geophysics, or a closely related field. Experience with numerical modelling, volcanology, or geophysical data analysis is advantageous. Eligibility for home tuition fees is required for full funding. The application deadline is 8 January 2027, and interested candidates are encouraged to contact the lead supervisor, Dr. J Hickey, at [email protected] for further information about the research project.

To apply, visit the University of Exeter funding portal and review the full project details and eligibility criteria. Ensure all required documents are submitted before the deadline. This studentship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the understanding of volcanic unrest and its hazards, with real-world impact for institutions managing volcanic crises.
