About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of East Anglia on the environmental consequences of next-generation plastics, including biodegradable plastics and paper-based alternatives.
This project addresses a timely and important question in environmental science: whether biodegradable plastics really reduce harm compared with conventional fossil-fuel-derived plastics. Despite rapid growth in the use of alternative materials, their effects on organisms, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning remain under-tested. The research will generate evidence that can inform plastics policy and wider sustainability goals, including marine protection and the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14.
The project combines laboratory experiments and in situ field work in aquatic environments, specifically the River Yare in Norfolk and Breydon Water estuary in Great Yarmouth. These sites represent freshwater and transitional marine systems where plastic litter accumulates. The student will compare biodegradable plastics, conventional plastics, and paper-based alternatives at environmentally relevant concentrations, examining biodiversity responses at the start and end of experiments and measuring ecosystem processes such as sediment oxygen demand, carbon cycling, and nutrient exchange.
The successful candidate will join the Centre for Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation group at the University of East Anglia and receive training in experimental design, lab and field methods, ecotoxicology, biogeochemical cycling, taxonomy, bioinformatics, statistical analysis, and science communication. Additional external training, including mixed effects modelling, may be available, alongside cohort training delivered by ARIES.
Funding is provided through ARIES studentships and, for eligible candidates, covers fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of studentships are available to international applicants, with home/international fee differences waived by the university, although relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.
Applicants should be enthusiastic about laboratory and fieldwork, ecology, toxicology, and ecosystem functioning. The deadline is 23:59 on 16 December 2026.

What's required
Applicants should be enthusiastic about laboratory and fieldwork, ecology, toxicology, and ecosystem functioning. The project particularly suits candidates with an interest in environmental science, experimental ecology, and working in freshwater and estuarine settings. UKRI eligibility criteria apply for fully funded status; a limited number of international studentships are available, subject to the university waiving the home/international fee difference.
How to apply
Apply via the university's Apply button on the posting page. Submit your application before 23:59 on 16 December 2026. Review UKRI eligibility requirements if you wish to be considered for the fully funded award.
