About this position
[4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD CASE studentship with Inspiralis Limited. Includes full payment of tuition fees, a stipend of £20,780 per year (2025/6 rate), and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.] This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia explores how RNA molecules and their modifications shape genome regulation in the nervous system, focusing on the activity of topoisomerase I (TOP1) during C. elegans nervous system development. The project is based in Dr Alper Akay’s RNA (epi)genetics laboratory, which is well-resourced and supported by a UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship.
The research will use advanced molecular genetics, genomics, and biochemistry techniques, including Oxford Nanopore sequencing, to investigate the interplay between RNA modifications and genome regulation. The student will receive multidisciplinary training, including industrial biochemistry experience with Inspiralis Ltd., and will collaborate with the Earlham Institute. The Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP) provides a vibrant research community, comprehensive professional development, and a 4-year CASE studentship. All students undertake a 3–18 month placement with a non-academic partner, gaining valuable industry experience.
The studentship covers full tuition, a generous stipend (£20,780 per year for 2025/6), and a £5,000 annual research training grant. Applicants should have at least a UK 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) and meet English language requirements (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6 in each category).
The start date is 1 October 2026, and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in February 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the UEA application portal and the NRPDTP website.
