Imperial College London is offering a PhD studentship in the Department of Aeronautics focused on real-time data assimilation for multi-physics flows . The project addresses a central challenge in engineering prediction: physics-based models can extrapolate to unobserved conditions but contain uncertain parameters and neglected physical effects, while measurements provide information about the true system state but are sparse and noisy. The doctoral research will develop bias-aware data assimila...

About this position

[Full tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of £23,805 for Home, EU and International students.]

This fully funded PhD studentship is based in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London and is supervised by Dr. Andrea Nóvoa. The project addresses a core challenge in engineering simulation: how to combine imperfect physical models with sparse, noisy measurements when operating conditions are changing quickly.

The research will develop bias-aware real-time data assimilation methods that can estimate and correct model error as the system evolves. In contrast to many existing approaches, the work is designed to learn from new data while still respecting the governing physics. The intended outcome is a model that updates whenever measurements are assimilated, improving forecasts without violating physical constraints.

The project begins with low-order dynamical systems to prototype and test the methods, then scales them to higher-dimensional multi-physics problems. The advert highlights applications inspired by aircraft wings, wind turbines, and combustors, where fluid flows interact with structural vibrations, acoustics, and chemical reactions. This places the project at the interface of fluid mechanics, uncertainty-aware modelling, and computational engineering.

You will gain experience in data assimilation, Bayesian inference, physics-constrained machine learning, and computational methods for multi-physics systems. The project also includes use of high-performance computing facilities, opportunities to present at international conferences, and publication in peer-reviewed journals, within Imperial’s doctoral training and career-support environment.

The studentship is part of Imperial’s research environment in aeronautics and computational modelling, and it is positioned for students interested in methods that connect physics, mathematics, and computation to real engineering systems.

What's required

Candidates are expected to achieve or have achieved a First class honours MEng/MSci or higher degree, or an international equivalent, in a mathematical or engineering discipline such as Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or Physics. A background in computational physics or mathematics, data assimilation, or dynamical systems for fluid mechanics is an advantage. The advert seeks curious and motivated candidates who enjoy working at the interface between physics, mathematics and computation.
