PhD Studentship in Experimental Physics: Novel Materials and Structures for Quantum Photonics
Newcastle University invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship focused on the development of novel materials and structures for quantum photonics. This interdisciplinary project addresses the growing demands for energy-efficient and high-performance photonic devices, driven by the quantum revolution. The successful candidate will work on creating materials and components that enable strong light-matter interactions and enhance nonlinear optical responses, paving the way for advanced photonic functionalities.
The research will encompass the investigation of semiconductors, composites, waveguides, and resonators. Students will have the opportunity to explore synthesis and fabrication strategies, as well as develop advanced methods for optical characterisation. Training will be provided in the use of state-of-the-art photonic experimental instruments and advanced characterisation facilities available at Newcastle University.
By integrating cutting-edge materials with innovative photonic structures, this project aims to enable the next generation of photonic devices for quantum applications. The studentship is sponsored by EPSRC and offers comprehensive support, including 100% coverage of tuition fees and a minimum tax-free annual living allowance of £20,780 (2025/26 UKRI rate). Additional project costs are also covered, ensuring access to all necessary resources for successful research.
Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants should hold at least a 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject. The selection process values prior experience, enthusiasm for research, and independent thinking. Excellent analytical skills and strong communication abilities are essential. A Masters qualification is not mandatory if the candidate meets the degree requirement or can demonstrate equivalent experience. Non-native English speakers must provide an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (minimum 5.5 in all sub-skills). International applicants may need an ATAS clearance certificate for visa purposes.
Application Process
To apply, candidates must use the University’s Apply to Newcastle Portal, select the programme code 8839F ('PhD Physics (FT) (Experimental)'), and upload a completed Personal Statement using the provided template. The studentship code DLA2615 should be entered in the 'Studentship/Partnership Reference' field. No separate research proposal upload is required. Applications missing the required Personal Statement will not be considered.
Supervision and Contact
The project will be supervised by Dr Leo Tsui and Prof Noel Healy, who bring expertise in experimental physics and quantum photonics. For further information, prospective applicants can contact Dr. Leo Tsui at [email protected] or reach out to [email protected] for independent advice on the application process.
Key Dates
Application deadline: 16 January 2026. The studentship will commence on 1 October 2026 and will run for four years.
This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about experimental physics, quantum technologies, and advanced materials research, offering a supportive environment and access to world-class facilities at Newcastle University.
