PhD opportunity: Time crystals and next-generation data processing at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom. This competition-funded Doctor of Philosophy project explores time crystals, an unusual state of matter, and their potential for “timetronics”—an information-processing paradigm based on dynamical states of matter. The research will investigate the timetron , a nanomechanical element switched by light between rest and sustained oscillation to encode logical 0 and 1 states. The pro...

About this position

The University of Cambridge is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in Thermodynamic Modelling of Minority Phases in EAF Steels, based in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy within the Structural Materials Group. The project is funded by Tata Steel and the University of Cambridge and begins on 1 October 2027.

The research addresses challenges arising from the transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. It will use thermodynamic modelling to predict equilibrium and, where possible, non-equilibrium phases in flat-rolled steel compositions containing elevated levels of copper, molybdenum, nickel and tin. Predictions will be integrated with machine-learning models to forecast phase formation in EAF steels with high residual-element contents.

Researchers will compare model predictions with experimentally identified phases from high-throughput samples. Experimental characterization may include scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, nano-secondary ion mass spectrometry and 3D atom probe tomography. The resulting data will support improvements to thermodynamic database parameters and predictive capability.

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a good UK Master's degree, or overseas equivalent, in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or a related science subject. Self-motivation, research ownership and effective communication are expected. Training in computational and experimental techniques will be provided, while prior relevant experience is advantageous.

The studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years, with a maintenance stipend starting at £22,437 per year at the current rate. Home-fee eligibility applies; overseas applicants may need to cover additional international fees, though exceptional candidates may be eligible for an International Doctoral Scholar award. Applications close on 1 December 2026, with interviews shortly afterwards.
