About this position

This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia investigates the impact of myeloma therapies on the gut microbiome and how these changes influence immune function and infection risk. Multiple myeloma affects thousands of people annually in the UK, and infections remain a significant cause of morbidity and early mortality. Recent research suggests that chemotherapy and immunotherapy can alter the gut microbiome, which is closely linked to immune regulation.

The project hypothesizes that treatment-induced changes in the microbiome directly affect immune responses and increase susceptibility to infection. The student will use both preclinical mouse models and stool samples from myeloma patients to assess microbiome alterations. In parallel, the project will explore how these changes impact immune cell populations and responses to infection. Training will be provided in in vivo techniques, including animal handling and isolation of primary human samples under ethical approval.

The student will also learn cellular biology methodologies such as DNA isolation, library preparation, sequencing, and bioinformatics for data analysis. Supervision is provided by Dr Hellmich, a clinical researcher with access to patient samples, and Prof Rushworth, an experienced supervisor with a strong track record of PhD student success. The laboratory offers a collaborative environment with regular meetings, journal clubs, and opportunities to present research at conferences. The studentship is fully funded for four years, covering tuition fees, a generous annual stipend (£20,780 for 2025/26), and a Research Training Support Grant.

Applicants should have at least a UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 and meet English language requirements (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6 in each category).
