About this position
This PhD studentship at the University of Exeter explores how quantum graph theory can be used to model relativistic effects in metamaterials. The project sits at the intersection of mathematical physics, wave propagation, and engineered materials, with a focus on discrete graph-based descriptions of complex media.
Quantum graph theory provides a powerful framework for studying networks of edges and vertices governed by differential operators. In this project, that framework will be applied to metamaterial systems with unusual effective properties, including scenarios that mimic curved spacetime and other relativistic phenomena. The research is relevant to spectral analysis, photonic and phononic crystals, and to acoustic or electromagnetic network realisations that can be studied experimentally.
A central aim is to investigate effective material properties of curved-spacetime scenarios that may be difficult to address using direct continuum methods. The project also considers the Tamm medium and related nonhomogeneous, anisotropic media, with a piecewise homogeneous modelling approach where appropriate. This makes the studentship especially attractive for candidates interested in theoretical modelling with clear links to experimentally verifiable systems.
The studentship provides full fee funding and a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7. The application deadline is 8 December 2026. Interested applicants should use the University of Exeter application link and consult the project page for submission details.
