About this position
PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia on the quantification and characterisation of genetic diversity and population structure in wild fisheries species. This project sits within the ARIES studentship framework and is conducted with CEFAS researchers, combining genomics, population genetics, and fisheries science to address major questions in sustainable marine resource management.
The research will focus on two commercially harvested species with contrasting population trends in UK waters: Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus). The project aims to generate pangenomes to capture genomic variation, quantify genetic diversity, and characterise population demographics. It will use long-read DNA sequencing approaches that can detect both nucleotide and structural variants, and may also support non-lethal age prediction through methylation-based signals from small tissue samples.
This is a strong fit for students interested in bioinformatics, genomics, population genomics, and evidence-based fisheries management. The training environment is research-rich and collaborative, with opportunities to work alongside academic and industrial partners, engage with advanced sequencing and analytical methods, and build professional experience through journal clubs, lab meetings, conferences, and wider collaborative networks. The project is expected to lead to at least two publications.
Funding is fully supported for eligible UKRI candidates and includes fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, with the difference between home and international fees waived by the university; however, relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered. The application deadline is 16 December 2026. Interested applicants should apply via the University of East Anglia postgraduate research application portal and complete the ARIES Equality and Diversity Form after applying.
Applicants are sought who are enthusiastic about genomics and population genomics for sustainable fish stock management. Prior experience in population genetics and genomics is desirable. Academic qualifications are considered together with non-academic experience, with equal weighting given to both experience and potential.
