University of Hull PhD project: Enhancing the Otago Exercise Programme to Preserve Bone Health This doctoral project will develop a more accessible exercise approach for postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis. The research builds on the established home-based Otago Exercise Programme, enhancing it with resistance bands throughout each movement and high-speed contractions designed to increase the rate of force development and skeletal loading. The approach is intended for people who...

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton on metabolic health , GLP-1 receptor agonists , and pancreas–bone crosstalk . This project asks whether bone density loss seen in people taking GLP-1 weight-loss drugs is caused by the medication itself or by weight loss and reduced skeletal loading. It also investigates possible pancreatic effects of long-term exposure, especially in people with excess pancreatic fat. You will work with micro-CT imaging of patient pancreatic tissue, human stem-ce...

About this position

[Funding of fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.]

PhD studentship at the University of Exeter focused on understanding the osteogenic potential of exercise using musculoskeletal and finite element modelling.

This project addresses a major health challenge: osteoporosis and related fragility fractures. The research explores how different exercise interventions influence bone stress and how individual differences in bone size and shape affect estimated loading responses. By combining musculoskeletal modelling with finite element analysis, the project aims to improve understanding of which exercise features best stimulate bone growth and help prevent frailty later in life.

The studentship builds on existing work from the research group, which has developed a bone stress modelling pipeline capable of estimating stress in the femoral neck during activities. The successful candidate will extend this approach to study exercise selection, frequency, duration, and intensity, while also investigating how simple wearable-sensor metrics, such as inertial measurement unit or accelerometer data, may be related to estimated bone stresses.

This is an opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary project spanning biomechanics, bone health, exercise science, and computational modelling. The research has a strong applied focus, with the longer-term goal of translating complex modelling outputs into an accessible metric that can support public engagement with bone health and exercise planning.

Funding is available and includes tuition fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7. The application deadline is 8 December 2026. Applicants should use the University of Exeter application link provided in the advert.
