About this position
Loughborough University, in collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), is offering a fully funded PhD/EngD opportunity focused on the development of a quantum network testbed. This project is at the forefront of quantum networking innovation, contributing to the UK's national quantum strategy and the future of the quantum internet. The research will address the design, implementation, and performance validation of quantum networks, with a strong emphasis on quantum-secure communications, entanglement distribution, and distributed quantum computing and sensing.
The successful candidate will work on scientific and engineering challenges required to realize scalable and secure quantum networks. Research activities may include modelling and experimental validation of quantum network performance, characterisation of quantum channels, nodes, and interfaces, and the development of assurance frameworks for security and trustworthiness, such as the Claims–Arguments–Evidence (CAE) methodology. The project offers hands-on experience at the intersection of quantum science, systems engineering, and cybersecurity, with exposure to a national-scale quantum infrastructure.
Supervision will be provided by Dr Siyuan Ji (Reader in MBSE) and Prof Michael Henshaw at Loughborough University. The project is best suited for candidates with a strong STEM background, particularly in physics, engineering, computer science, mathematics, or cyber security. Applicants must hold, or expect to achieve, a first-class or upper second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant field. Specific country equivalencies are provided on the university website.
The position is fully funded for UK students, including a generous tax-free stipend and tuition fees. International students are not eligible for funding. The start date is October 2026, and the application deadline is 28 February 2026. Interested candidates should apply online via the Loughborough University postgraduate research portal, ensuring all supporting documents are submitted before the deadline.
