About this position
This postdoctoral project is part of CoLiFlow, an ANR-funded research effort on the physics of foam formation in mixtures of organic liquids. The work sits at the interface of soft matter physics, interfacial physico-chemistry, and fluid mechanics, with the aim of understanding how liquid properties and flow conditions control the emergence, stability, drainage, and breakdown of foams in complex hydrocarbon systems.
The researcher will develop a fundamental, mechanism-based understanding of foam behaviour by combining original experiments with theoretical modelling. A major goal is to build predictive physical models that connect macroscopic foam behaviour to the properties of the liquid mixtures and to processes occurring at the scale of liquid films.
Experimentally, the postdoctoral researcher will study foam formation, stability, and drainage using Bikerman columns and controlled depressurisation experiments. The project also includes the characterisation of gas-liquid flow dynamics in vertical columns under a range of operating conditions, focusing on how hydrocarbon composition, viscosity, gas flow rate, and pressure variations affect the observed behaviour.
The postdoc will work with quantitative measurements of foam height, liquid fraction profiles, and flow characteristics, alongside model development and validation. The role also involves data analysis, interpretation of experimental results, and dissemination through scientific papers and conference presentations.
The research will be carried out at PICte, a joint research laboratory created between ESPCI Paris – PSL and TotalEnergies, located on the TotalEnergies research site in Lacq, France. The environment combines academic research with industrial expertise and provides access to experimental facilities and close interactions with scientists and engineers from both institutions.
