About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a post-doctoral assistant position in the Department of Food Technology, Safety and Health, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering. The department is renowned for its research and education in high-quality, safe, healthy, and sustainable food, with a strong emphasis on both product-oriented and health-related research. The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic environment, contributing to pioneering research in nutrition and health, and expanding expertise in the mechanistic understanding of human intervention studies.
The role involves developing independent research areas aligned with departmental objectives, such as understanding interactions between complex food matrices and the host, developing holistic models, and integrating biochemical, molecular, and epidemiological approaches. The position offers opportunities for collaboration within and beyond the faculty, aiming to create scientific foundations for novel risk-benefit models and nutritional recommendations.
At least 70% of the assignment is dedicated to academic research, including designing and coordinating joint experimental laboratory projects with PIs specializing in biochemical and molecular nutrition, food safety and toxicology, and nutritional epidemiology and data analysis. The postdoc will also assist in teaching at Bachelor and Master levels, supervise doctoral students, and participate in departmental services.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree by the appointment start date. For non-EU diplomas, a NARIC equivalence certificate is required. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in food science and nutrition, with a strong biological background encompassing molecular biology, human physiology, and data analysis. A track record of peer-reviewed publications, proactive leadership, and interest in student mentoring are essential. Proficiency in Dutch is required for teaching at the undergraduate level. Additional assets include educational expertise, stakeholder knowledge in nutrition and health, and experimental lab research experience.
The appointment is for three years, with the possibility of renewal for up to three more years following a favorable evaluation. Remuneration follows the AAP5 salary scale, and staff benefits include extensive training opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, and ecocheques. The position is based at Ghent University's main campus in Belgium, a leading institution with a strong commitment to diversity and equal opportunities.
Applications must be submitted online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system by 16 August 2026. Required documents include a CV with publication list, cover letter, diploma transcript, and, if applicable, a certificate of equivalence.
