About this position
This post-doctoral fellowship at Lund University sits at the interface of organic chemistry and chemical biology. The project develops a modular chemical platform for targeted protein degradation in bacteria, using BacPROTACs as a new strategy to address antimicrobial resistance.
The research centres on designing and synthesising bifunctional molecules that can recruit endogenous bacterial proteolytic machinery, including the ClpC:ClpP system, to selectively degrade essential proteins in drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Instead of blocking a target protein, the project aims to eliminate it through degradation, combining target-binding ligands, tunable linkers and protease-recruiting motifs.
The successful candidate will work across the full pipeline from molecular design and multistep synthesis through to biochemical and microbiological evaluation. This includes developing and applying assays for protein degradation and antibacterial activity, characterising compounds with spectroscopic and chromatographic methods, and interpreting structure–activity and structure–degradation relationships to guide the next design cycle.
The work is carried out in close collaboration with an infection biology group at Lund University, which contributes infection-relevant bacterial models and omics workflows. The role therefore offers a highly interdisciplinary environment spanning synthetic chemistry, assay development and antibacterial research, with interaction across a collaborative academic network.
The post also includes supervision of thesis students and doctoral candidates, participation in group and project meetings and seminars, and possible collaboration with industry and wider society.

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD, or an equivalent international degree, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the employment decision date unless special circumstances apply. Very good oral and written English is required. The candidate must have documented experience of multistep organic synthesis, including purification and structural characterisation of small molecules, as well as documented experience of experimental work at the interface of chemistry and biology such as biochemical, enzymatic, cell-based or microbiological assays. The applicant should be able to work independently in a structured and reliable manner and document and report experimental work accurately. Strong merits include combining synthetic organic chemistry with chemical biology, assay development, bifunctional molecules such as PROTACs, recombinant protein work, microbiology and antibacterial susceptibility testing, proteomics or transcriptomics workflows, medicinal chemistry, peptide chemistry, photoredox or radical chemistry, and experience from industry or contract research.
How to apply
