About this position
University of Bordeaux is recruiting a Post-doctoral researcher in coastal dynamics W/M within the laboratory Oceanic and Continental Environments and Palaeoenvironments (EPOC). This is a postdoctoral position based in Pessac, Gironde, France, in the Bordeaux metropolitan area and close to the Atlantic coast. The contract is full-time and temporary, with a duration of 30 months and a gross monthly salary of €2750 to €3090 depending on experience and salary grid.
The project is part of IRICOT, within the French PEPR Risks programme, and focuses on the seasonal to decadal variability of coastal indicators in metropolitan France in relation to climate variability. The successful candidate will study the links between climate variability modes and coastal hazards on the French Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, with a particular emphasis on water levels, marine weather conditions, and mechanisms that influence coastal risk. The work combines literature review, statistical and physical analysis, and integration of multiple data sources.
Scientific tasks include a bibliographic synthesis on climate variability and its impacts on coastal systems; analysis of seasonal, interannual, and decadal water-level variability using tide gauges, retrospective simulations, and satellite altimetry; and the identification of relationships between water levels and climate indices such as NAO, EA, SCAND, and WEPA/WEMO. The postdoc will also help identify new climate indices or combinations of indices where appropriate, and relate these to broader environmental indicators from networks such as SOMLIT and COAST-HF. The role involves close collaboration with climate scientists and project partners to support future climate services aimed at anticipating coastal risks.
The position is hosted by EPOC, a multidisciplinary joint research unit under the supervision of the University of Bordeaux, CNRS, Bordeaux INP, and the École Pratique des Hautes Études. The laboratory has strong expertise in ecotoxicology, ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental chemistry, sedimentology, paleoclimatology, coastal oceanography, and marine geosciences. The postdoc will work within the METHYS team and collaborate with partners at BRGM (Orléans) and CEFREM (UPVD, CNRS, Perpignan).
Eligibility highlights include a PhD in coastal dynamics, oceanography, climate science, environmental science, or a related field; at least 2 years of experience; strong programming and data-analysis skills in Python, R, and/or MATLAB; competence in statistics and time-series analysis; familiarity with climate variability and large-scale teleconnections; and the ability to integrate heterogeneous observational and model datasets. Good English is required. The position is subject to French working laws and a PPST authorization process.
Application deadline: 13 November 2026 at 12:00 (Europe/Paris). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Interested candidates should apply via the University of Bordeaux recruitment website and upload the required documents: CV, cover letter (maximum 2 pages), publication list, recommendation letter(s), and contact details of previous supervisors.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in coastal dynamics, oceanography, climate science, environmental science, or a related field, with at least 2 years of experience. Strong skills are required in physical oceanography, coastal dynamics/processes and/or atmospheric science, scientific communication, programming and data processing (notably Python, R and/or MATLAB), climate variability and large-scale variability concepts, statistics and time series analysis, and integration of heterogeneous data sources (observations, satellites, reanalyses, models). Candidates should be autonomous, rigorous, organized, proactive, and able to work collaboratively. Good English is required. The position is located in an area covered by the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), so arrival must be authorized by the competent authority of the Ministry, and French working laws apply.
How to apply
Apply through the University of Bordeaux job portal using the provided website link. Submit a CV, a cover letter of up to 2 pages, a list of publications, recommendation letter(s), and contact details of previous supervisors.
