About this position
University College Cork’s School of Physics is offering a 24-month full-time postdoctoral research position within the Macroscopic Quantum Science and Technology (MARQUIS) project. The role sits in a highly specialised quantum sensing and superconducting devices environment, where the research programme uses unique spin noise spectrometers such as QSNAP1, TERTIA, and ANDROMEDA to study the surface, bulk, and nanoscale quantum properties of novel candidate materials.
The successful candidate will also contribute to the development of multifunctional millikelvin STM and spin noise microscope concepts. This is a strong opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher with experience in experimental condensed matter physics, quantum sensing, and advanced scientific instrumentation.
The position is particularly suited to applicants with expertise in several of the following areas: sub-Kelvin cryofree refrigeration; operation and maintenance of 3He and 3He-4He dilution refrigerators; ultra-low vibration experiment design; persistent superconducting magnets up to 20 Tesla; SQUIDs, Josephson junctions, and superconducting qubits; high-frequency data acquisition and control electronics; scientific instrument design and fabrication; quantum spin liquid and quantum spin ice theory; and data management, analysis, and machine learning for large image-array datasets.
The appointment is based at University College Cork in Cork, Ireland. It is a temporary, full-time research post with salary on the IUA PD1 Research Salary Scale at approximately €47,273–€53,925 per annum. The advert notes that Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in Physics. Informal inquiries may be directed to Prof. J.C. Séamus Davis in the Physics Department.
The deadline for applications is 8 January 2027 at 12:00 noon Irish local time. Applications must be submitted online through the University College Cork vacancy portal or the university research vacancies site. No late applications will be accepted.
