About this position
University College Cork is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a 24-month, whole-time fixed-term project in the School of Physics. The project, Macroscopic Quantum Science and Technology – MARQUIS, investigates the relationship between quantum spin liquids and high-temperature superconductivity.
The research uses advanced quantum sensing and condensed matter physics techniques, including quantum spin noise spectroscopy, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), low-temperature spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), superconducting qubits, high-field magnets, cryogenic systems, and AI-based analysis of high-volume image-array data. The work addresses quantum materials, correlated metals, topological states, superconductors, and the fundamental theory of spin liquids.
The successful candidate should bring expertise in several relevant areas, such as sub-kelvin and dilution refrigeration, ultra-low-vibration experiments, persistent superconducting magnets up to 20 Tesla, Josephson junctions and SQUIDs, GHz-bandwidth data acquisition, scientific instrument design and fabrication, spectroscopic imaging STM, spin-liquid theory, or machine learning and custom software for advanced data analysis.
The salary is €47,273–€53,925 per annum on the IUA PD1 Research Salary Scale. Applications must be submitted online by 12 noon Irish Local Time on 8 January 2027. Informal inquiries may be directed to Prof. J.C. Séamus Davis.
