About this position
University College Cork is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Physics for the 24-month MARQUIS project, Macroscopic Quantum Science and Technology. The role focuses on quantum sensing and the physics of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), which underpin advances in solid-state quantum computing and quantum sensing.
The successful researcher will use the QSNAP1, TERTIA, and ANDROMEDA spin noise spectrometers to investigate the surface, bulk, and nanoscale quantum properties of novel materials. The project will also pioneer multifunctional millikelvin scanning tunnelling microscope and spin noise microscope concepts.
Relevant expertise may include sub-kelvin cryofree refrigeration, ultra-low-vibration experiments, high-field superconducting magnets, Josephson junctions, SQUIDs, superconducting qubits, high-frequency data acquisition, scientific instrument design and fabrication, quantum spin liquid or quantum spin ice theory, and data analysis using custom software and machine learning. The post offers a salary of €47,273–€53,925 per year. Applications must be submitted online by 12 noon Irish Local Time on 8 January 2027. Informal inquiries may be directed to Professor J.C. Séamus Davis.
