About this position
This postdoctoral position is based in engineering acoustics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology’s Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory. The project develops the next generation of acoustics-based traffic sensing, using cost-effective roadside microphones together with signal processing and machine learning to provide continuous, real-time information on traffic flows, vehicle types, and traffic noise.
The work builds on established testbeds and unique datasets from the Stockholm urban environment. A major part of the research will involve deploying acoustic sensor units in urban settings, developing methods to detect and classify vehicle pass-bys, and moving from processing on the sensor edge to cloud-based analysis.
The position is embedded in two Digital Futures-funded projects carried out with the City of Stockholm, Nacka municipality, and other regional municipalities. One project expands an acoustic sensor network across the Stockholm region, while the other develops a validated roadside monitoring system.
You will validate methods against reference measurements and help make the resulting data available through APIs and visualisation tools for municipal users. The role also includes scientific publishing, co-supervising students, and contributing to new proposals and innovation activities in a collaborative research environment with strong links to public-sector partners.
The appointment is time-limited and focuses on research in a practical, application-oriented setting.

What's required
A doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree is required and must be obtained no later than the time the employment decision is made. Applicants should have a strong background in at least two of acoustic measurements, signal processing, machine learning, sensor systems, or embedded systems, documented research experience through scientific publications, good programming skills such as Python, and proficiency in English in both written and spoken form. Preferred qualifications include a doctorate obtained within the last three years, experience with acoustics-based traffic monitoring or vehicle detection from sound, long-term field deployment of sensors or measurement systems, machine learning for audio or time-series data including edge devices, data pipelines/databases/APIs/web visualisation, collaboration with non-academic stakeholders, and interest in innovation and applying research results. The candidate should also be curious, independent, motivated by practical impact, and demonstrate teaching ability, awareness of diversity and equal opportunity with a focus on gender equality, and independence.
