About this position
This postdoctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the additive manufacturing of non-weldable Ni-base superalloys and Ti-alloys. The role is based in the Division of Materials and Manufacture within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, a vibrant and international environment dedicated to advancing materials science and sustainable manufacturing solutions. The research project is closely linked to the Centre for Additive Manufacture – Metal (CAM2), focusing on powder-based metal additive manufacturing and process development.
The successful candidate will lead research on robust AM and post-AM processing of Ni-base superalloys and Ti-alloys, utilizing recent advances in laser processing and in-situ process control. Responsibilities include coordinating research projects within the CAM2 framework, collaborating with academic, industrial, and societal partners, and performing hands-on manufacturing and microstructure characterization using advanced tools such as SEM, EDS, EBSD, TEM, and APT. Mechanical testing (tensile, fatigue, creep) and thermodynamic simulations (using CALPHAD tools like Thermo-Calc and JMatPro) are integral to the role, with a special focus on post-AM treatments to minimize cracking and optimize material properties.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent, with strong English communication skills and experience in metal additive manufacturing and microstructure characterization. Preferred qualifications include a recent doctoral degree (within three years), expertise in mechanical testing, familiarity with other AM technologies (PBF-EB, DED), in-situ process monitoring, and advanced materials characterization. Social skills and teaching experience are valued, and the position offers opportunities to supervise students and engage in undergraduate/master’s teaching.
The contract is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers provides a dynamic working environment with comprehensive employee benefits, including healthcare, parental leave, subsidized day care, and free schools. The university is committed to gender equality and diversity, offering Swedish language courses for international staff.
To apply, candidates should submit a comprehensive CV (including publication list), details of teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining research background and future goals, all in English and PDF format. Applications must be complete and submitted via the online application form by May 11, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Eduard Hryha at [email protected].
Chalmers University of Technology is renowned for its research and education in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and sustainability in close collaboration with industry and society. Join a team dedicated to shaping the future of materials and manufacturing in a supportive and inspiring environment.
