Postdoc in Human-in-the-Loop Autonomous Systems Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden

Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting 5 postdocs for research in human-in-the-loop autonomous systems at the Division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering, within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in Gothenburg, Sweden. The position is centered on developing the next generation of safer, more secure, and more usable autonomous and software-intensive systems that can work effectively with people in domains such as healthcare, transportation, robotics, and smart infrastructure.

The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Associate Professor Rebekka Wohlrab, whose research interests include human-centered software engineering and self-adaptive systems. The research environment is described as collaborative and interdisciplinary, with links to doctoral students, other postdocs, and a larger team in a department that spans a broad range of computing disciplines and maintains strong industry connections.

Several project directions are available. One focuses on adaptive coordination between humans and autonomous systems, including software architecture solutions, runtime models such as behavior trees or state machines, prototypes, and experiments. Another focuses on expectations in autonomous systems, aiming to model user expectations with formal methods, support reasoning at runtime, and evaluate the work through simulations and experiments with physical robots. There is also room to explore related themes such as cybersecurity in human-machine teaming.

The position is partially supported by the Swedish Research Council (VR), the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), and Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). The appointment is a full-time temporary employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence throughout the employment is required.

Eligibility requirements include a doctoral degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or an equivalent foreign degree, strong English communication skills, a documented research track record relevant to the project, motivation, independence, analytical ability, and teaching aptitude. Obtaining the PhD within the last three years is considered meritorious.
