About this position
This postdoctoral project at Delft University of Technology focuses on the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic recovery of a newly created offshore sand extraction pit in the Dutch North Sea. The work is part of the multidisciplinary BACI Sand Extraction programme, which uses a Before-After-Control-Impact approach to understand the physical and ecological effects of sand extraction over timescales from individual storms to multiple years.
The selected postdoc will work with unique field observations collected from instrumented measurement frames installed in and around the pit. These measurements capture waves, turbulence, current profiles, suspended sediment concentrations, and seabed evolution, creating a rare dataset for investigating how the pit modifies flow and sediment dynamics and how the seabed adapts over time.
The project asks important questions about the mechanisms and timescales of morphological recovery, including whether recovery is driven mainly by storm events or by slower infilling processes. The research also supports interpretation of ecological recolonization by providing the physical boundary conditions needed to connect sedimentary and hydrodynamic processes with ecological recovery.
The postdoc will be embedded in a broader consortium involving Dutch governmental, academic, and applied research partners, including Rijkswaterstaat, Wageningen Marine Research, NIOZ, and Deltares. The position is based at TU Delft and offers the opportunity to contribute to interdisciplinary coastal research combining field data analysis, morphodynamic understanding, and potentially numerical or data-driven modelling.

What's required
A PhD in Hydraulic Engineering, Physical Oceanography, Physical Geography, Marine Science, or a closely related field is required. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in analysing and interpreting hydrodynamic and/or morphodynamic field or laboratory measurements, preferably in coastal or offshore environments. Strong quantitative skills are required, including scientific programming and advanced data analysis techniques. Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and willingness to collaborate with physical and ecological researchers are expected.
