About this position
This postdoctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to advance research in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) within the Division of Product Development, Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The research focuses on innovative systems engineering design, particularly the integration of advanced materials and manufacturing technologies into whole jet engine systems. The project addresses the challenge of developing MBSE approaches that capture both the opportunities and constraints introduced by additive manufacturing and other advanced technologies, with the goal of supporting conceptual design and system-level modeling for small jet engine architectures.
The successful candidate will work on integrating material and manufacturing behavior with mechanical and thermal performance models, manufacturability considerations, and sustainability metrics. The research will combine physics-based models, reduced-order representations, and data-driven approaches within MBSE frameworks to support early-stage architectural decisions, trade-off analyses, and system validation. Key aspects include developing modeling strategies that link material properties and manufacturing process parameters to component-level and overall engine system performance, using state-of-the-art MBSE methods and tools. The work will also address model fidelity, uncertainty, design margins, and traceability, ensuring consistency between detailed simulations, experimental data, and higher-level system models.
This position is part of a collaborative initiative involving Chalmers University of Technology, GKN Aerospace, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, focused on developing an experimental jet engine demonstrator for system validation. The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate closely with industrial and academic partners, contributing MBSE expertise to practical engineering challenges. Expected outcomes include novel MBSE methodologies, high-quality scientific publications, and contributions to industrial development practices, supporting the development of manufacturable and sustainable jet engine architectures and long-term competence building in aerospace systems engineering.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent, with strong written and verbal English skills and expertise in modeling and simulation in Engineering Design. Experience in aerospace engineering, additive manufacturing, teaching, supervision, teamwork, industrial collaboration, and MBSE tools is highly valued. The position is a full-time, two-year contract with the possibility of a one-year extension, requiring physical presence in Sweden and a valid residence permit. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring work environment in Gothenburg, with comprehensive employee benefits, support for gender equality and diversity, and Swedish language courses for non-native speakers.
To apply, prepare your documents in English (PDF format), including a comprehensive CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and future goals. Applications must be submitted via the provided online form; incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. The deadline for applications is January 20th, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Ola Isaksson at [email protected].
