About this position

The University of Gothenburg invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Physics, with a focus on optical microstructures and nanofabrication. The Department of Physics is centrally located in Gothenburg and is renowned for its research in atom and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, spintronics, and complex systems. The department fosters an international environment with extensive collaborations and offers innovative study programs at all levels.

This postdoctoral opportunity is based in the research group led by Professor Giovanni Volpe, which specializes in soft and active matter, optical tweezers, statistical physics, and machine learning. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research on nanofabrication, characterization, and optical system development for nanophotonic metamaterials. The role involves fabrication of nanomaterials using advanced lithography, development of optical artificial intelligence systems, and adaptation to complex optical stimuli. Key tasks include micro and nanofabrication, working with on-chip light-driven micromachines, and the numerical simulation of reflection and transmission holograms. Experience in designing and constructing optical setups for measuring density distributions is essential.

Applicants must hold a PhD in physics or a closely related discipline, awarded within the last three years (exceptions for illness or parental leave may apply). Candidates should have documented experience in advanced nanofabrication techniques, cleanroom work, and proficiency in building and refining optical setups. Strong communication skills in English and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required. The position is a fixed-term, full-time appointment for two years, with salary determined individually.

To apply, candidates must register an account in the University of Gothenburg's online recruitment system and submit a complete application before the deadline of 28 April 2026. Required documents include a cover letter, CV with scientific publications, exam certificate, and contact details for two referees. If documents cannot be uploaded electronically, they should be mailed to Prof. Giovanni Volpe at the Department of Physics. Applications must be written in English. The University values equal opportunities, diversity, and an inclusive working environment.

For further information, contact Professor Giovanni Volpe at [email protected]. Additional details about the department and Gothenburg Physics Centre can be found at www.physics.gu.se/english and www.chalmers.se/en/centres/gpc/Pages/default.aspx.
