The role is part of the Formas-funded DYNAMO project, which aims to develop dynamic synthetic populations and mobility digital twins for advanced transport planning. The research combines agent-based modelling, large-scale mobility data, generative modelling, resilience indicators, and equity analysis to create behaviourally rich and policy-relevant simulations of mobility adaptation under changing conditions.
The successful candidate will join the Division of Physical Resource Theory in Gothenburg, Sweden, and work within the STEAM group (Sustainable Transport, Energy Analytics and Modelling). The group is multidisciplinary, with expertise spanning engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences, and is dedicated to challenge-driven research in sustainable mobility, electrification, resilience, equity, and policy analysis. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU, Denmark), and Universidad del Desarrollo / ISI Foundation (Chile/Italy), bringing together international expertise in human mobility modelling, resilience science, and empirical disruption analysis.
The postdoc will contribute intellectually to the theoretical development of the project, connecting empirical mobility data and computational modelling with theories of complex systems, network dynamics, resilience, disruption response, adaptation, inequality, and urban systems. Key responsibilities include developing computational frameworks for resilient and equitable mobility, advancing agent-based and network-based models, designing dynamic synthetic populations, modelling adaptation to disruptions, and developing indicators for robustness, recovery, vulnerability, accessibility loss, and equity impacts. The role also involves working with large-scale mobility, transport network, census, land-use, and urban data, contributing to open and reproducible research workflows, and collaborating with researchers in mobility data science, urban analytics, resilience, digital twins, and policy analysis.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field (complex systems, network science, transport systems, urban science, computational social science, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, geography, urban planning, engineering, data science, resilience studies, or related disciplines). Strong theoretical or methodological doctoral training and interdisciplinary experience bridging theory, computation, and empirical data are highly valued. Required skills include independent research ability, computational and modelling expertise, quantitative modelling, simulation, data analysis, and excellent English communication. Experience with agent-based modelling, activity-based travel modelling, geospatial data analysis, mobility data analysis, generative modelling, transport simulation, network modelling, or data fusion is essential. Additional desirable skills include programming in Python, R, Julia, Java, MATSim, GIS tools, open science practices, and stakeholder engagement in transport, urban planning, public policy, emergency preparedness, or infrastructure planning.
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
