About this position
Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Section for Manufacturing Engineering, is offering a postdoc position in X-ray diffraction and strain analysis within the EIC Transition project Laboratory 4 Dimensional X-ray Diffraction for Sustainable Materials Development (Lab4DMade).
The project aims to develop local strain analysis tools for the state-of-the-art laboratory 4D X-ray micro-beam diffraction technique (Lab-4DµXRD) and apply the method to quantify local microstructural evolution during mechanical loading. The position is designed to support the development of a novel characterization platform for next-generation sustainable materials.
The successful candidate will work on software development for analyzing elastic strain tensors and local plastic strains from Lab-4DµXRD data, perform in situ experiments during tensile loading of aluminum samples containing second-phase intermetallic particles, and carry out synchrotron experiments to validate laboratory diffraction results. The project also includes implementing crystal plasticity finite element models to interpret local strain heterogeneities.
The work will be carried out in collaboration with the DTU Lab4DMade team, senior scientists and technicians, postdocs and PhD researchers, as well as external partners including Xnovo Technology ApS.
Applicants should have a PhD degree or equivalent and a strong background in X-ray physics, microstructural characterization, plastic deformation, crystallography, physical metallurgy, mechanics, and strain analysis. Experience with synchrotron or laboratory 3D diffraction imaging is a significant advantage, and excellent English communication skills are essential.
The position is full-time (37 hours/week) for 1.5 years, starting on 1 November 2026 or by mutual agreement. Salary follows the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, with supplements negotiable according to DTU’s salary structure for scientific staff.
Application deadline: 17 September 2026 at 23:59 Danish time. Applications must be submitted online through the DTU recruitment portal.
