About this position
Postdoc opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering.
This postdoctoral project focuses on observations of aircraft contrails and on using those observations to evaluate and improve contrail prediction models. Contrails are described as a major contributor to aviation’s climate impact, and the research goal is to support contrail avoidance strategies by reducing uncertainty in model predictions of where contrails persist and how much impact they have.
The successful candidate will create high-quality datasets of contrail observations by combining data from multiple instruments, including ground-based imagery, LIDAR measurements, and satellite imagery. These datasets will be used by modelers to test and improve prediction methods. The position is based in the Operations and Environment section of TU Delft’s Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, and the postdoc will work closely with Dr. Vincent Meijer as well as PhD candidates and MSc students.
Research themes include atmospheric science, remote sensing, numerical modelling, uncertainty analysis, and the processing of large multi-source observational datasets. The work is particularly relevant to aviation climate mitigation, cloud/contrail physics, and model validation.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in atmospheric science, remote sensing, aerospace engineering, physics, or a closely related field; strong programming and data-analysis skills, preferably in Python; experience with atmospheric observations, remote sensing and/or numerical modelling; ability to work with large datasets; and strong communication and collaboration skills in English. Experience with contrails, cloud physics, or machine learning is considered an advantage.
Employment conditions: 1-year contract, 38–40 hours per week, with salary and benefits in line with the Dutch university collective labour agreement. TU Delft also mentions an excellent pension scheme, flexible working arrangements, leave provisions, training opportunities, and relocation support through its Coming to Delft Service.
Application deadline: 1 December 2026. Applicants should apply online and upload a CV, motivational letter, and relevant research experience. Applications by email or post will not be processed.
