About this position
This postdoctoral project at Delft University of Technology focuses on developing an open-science orbital dynamics platform built on the TU Delft Astrodynamics Toolbox (Tudat). The work combines core software development with radio-science applications for planetary missions, aiming to enable high-fidelity orbit propagation and orbit estimation from real tracking data such as Doppler, range, and VLBI.
The selected researcher/developer will help advance Tudat’s C++ core and Python interfaces, strengthen the robustness and maintainability of the codebase, and expand the software’s estimation capabilities for radio-science workflows. A key part of the role is to implement and validate new observation and dynamical models, support mission-specific configuration, and extend background models such as gravity variations, radiation pressure, atmosphere, and spacecraft dynamics.
Scientific application is central to the appointment: the postdoc will lead the use of the framework on selected missions and representative datasets, define validation cases, produce reference results, and help coordinate scientific priorities with project partners. The role also includes contributing to scientific publications and building reproducible end-to-end workflows that support FAIR and open science.
The position sits within TU Delft’s Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, in an international and collaborative research environment that brings together postdocs, PhD candidates, scientific staff, and partners across TU Delft and other institutes. The successful candidate will also produce documentation, tutorials, and developer guides, and support users through issue tracking and community channels.
