About this position
The Research Group Governance of Crisis at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA), Leiden University, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to research on EU crisis governance and transboundary disaster and crisis management. The project sits within a multidisciplinary environment in The Hague and connects crisis studies with broader debates in public administration, organization science, sociology, safety science, political science, and research methods.
The postdoc will work on independent and collaborative research that builds on the group’s recent work on the evolution of crisis in the European Union and uses an open-access dataset to study transboundary crises and transboundary crisis management. The role emphasizes collecting and analyzing quantitative comparative data, combining large-N datasets where relevant, and producing publishable outputs for academic and non-academic audiences. The research agenda spans crisis preparedness, response, and recovery, with a focus on understanding the political, organizational, and societal dimensions of crisis governance.
Alongside research, the successful candidate will contribute to teaching and grading across minor, bachelor, and master-level courses within the institute, including the MSc in Crisis and Security Management. The role also includes supervising theses and capstone projects, and contributing to the development and implementation of the institute’s research strategy. The position is intended to help the candidate take the next step in an academic career within a socially relevant, internationally oriented research setting.
The post is based at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs in The Hague, part of Leiden University, and is embedded in an institute that studies security issues with local, national, transnational, and global impact.
