About this position
Chalmers University of Technology is offering a postdoctoral position in Data-Driven Product Realization within a major collaborative initiative, DRIVE PR – Data-Driven Product Realisation. The role is centered at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, with the possibility of being hosted within the Division of Systems and Control at the Department of Electrical Engineering depending on the successful candidate’s profile and research track.
The position is embedded in the Wingquist Laboratory and connects to research environments including Geometry Assurance & Robust Design, Systems Engineering Design, and Automation. The project aims to transform product realisation from data-enabled to truly data-driven practice by combining engineering design, AI, digital twins, simulation, manufacturing systems, 5G/6G, decision support, and industrial demonstrators. A key goal is to reduce uncertainty, risk, and variation in industrial product realisation and to demonstrate major cost reductions relative to a 2026 baseline.
The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with industrial partners, PhD students, senior researchers, and solution providers. Research directions may include data-driven geometry assurance, tolerancing and variation simulation, automated generation and annotation of simulation models from CAD and lifecycle data, digital twins and digital threads for engineering and manufacturing, uncertainty-aware decision support, hybrid physics-AI modelling, synthetic data generation, surrogate modelling, model-based systems engineering, digital infrastructure for connected engineering, and human-in-the-loop trustworthy AI-supported decisions.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field such as mechanical engineering, production engineering, automation, systems engineering, computer science, applied AI, data science, industrial digitalisation, communication systems, simulation, or optimisation, or have an equivalent foreign degree. Strong English communication skills, analytical ability, independence, collaboration skills, interdisciplinary interest, and teaching potential are required. Experience with industrial product development, digital twins, AI, uncertainty quantification, CAD/CAE integration, automation, systems engineering, or publishing in relevant journals and conferences will strengthen the application. Knowledge of Swedish is considered a merit, and recent PhD graduates are especially encouraged.
The appointment is a temporary full-time postdoctoral employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position requires physical presence throughout the employment. The successful applicant will gain access to real industrial cases, data, testbeds, demonstrators, and a strong interdisciplinary environment, with opportunities to contribute to teaching, supervision, dissemination, and international networks.
The application must be submitted in English via the online form by 2026-09-01. Candidates should upload a comprehensive CV, including a complete list of publications and prior teaching experience, and a personal letter describing their background, prior research, key outcomes, and future research goals. Email applications are not accepted.
