About this position
Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois, United States, invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral appointment in experimental physics and superconducting device development for quantum information science.
The researcher will help develop multipixel single-photon camera technology and multiplexed readout systems. Work will include designing, fabricating, and characterizing superconducting devices based on high-kinetic-inductance materials; developing microwave resonators and frequency-domain multiplexed readout for single-photon detectors; and studying superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors using NbN, TiN, and NbTiN for visible-to-telecom-wavelength detection.
Additional activities include scalable readout architectures using superconducting cryogenic switches such as hTron and fTron, low-noise cryogenic measurements, electromagnetic simulation, rapid fabrication-process refinement, and integrated characterization systems for solid-state single-photon emitters, including photon-correlation and spectroscopy measurements. The postdoctoral appointee will collaborate across Argonne’s High Energy Physics, X-ray Science, and Materials Science divisions and access dilution refrigerators, adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators, RF and DC measurement systems, and advanced cleanroom facilities at the Center for Nanoscale Materials.
Candidates should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD earned within the past five years in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline. Required preparation includes experience with superconducting or low-temperature quantum technologies and proficiency in cryogenic measurements. Preferred skills include SNSPD, TES, or KID development; thin-film deposition and lithography; microwave engineering; electromagnetic simulation; Python-based instrument control and analysis; quantum optics; and superconductivity theory. The expected salary range is $72,879–$121,465, with comprehensive benefits. Apply through the Argonne Careers portal under requisition 423429.

What's required
Applicants must have a recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD, completed within the last 0–5 years, in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Demonstrated experience with superconducting devices or related quantum or low-temperature technologies, especially device design, fabrication, and/or measurement, is required. Applicants should be proficient in low-noise cryogenic measurements from millikelvin to few-kelvin temperatures and demonstrate Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork. Preferred qualifications include experience with SNSPDs, TESs, or KIDs; cleanroom microfabrication, thin-film deposition, lithography, and etching; microwave resonator and RF measurement; electromagnetic simulation tools such as Sonnet, Ansys HFSS, or Lumerical; Python-based data acquisition and analysis; quantum optics measurements; and condensed-matter or BCS superconductivity theory.
