About this position
Rutgers University–New Brunswick is advertising a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Environmental Science focused on applied climatology and compound climate risk. The successful candidate will work with the Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist to study combined flooding from sea level rise, storm surge, and inland rainfall, as well as storm-induced extreme winds and precipitation and sequential synoptic weather systems.
The research emphasizes developing probabilistic frameworks to characterize hazard frequency and severity under current and future climate states. The role also includes observational data analysis, numerical modeling of natural hazards, and outreach to stakeholders across New Jersey and the mid-Atlantic region. The postdoc will contribute physical insights for risk assessment on topics including sea level, air quality, and agricultural impacts, and will communicate results through publications, public data visualization tools, academic presentations, and public engagement.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant area such as climate physics, atmospheric science, ocean science, climate change, natural hazards, impact analysis, or numerical modeling. Experience with climate/climate-change impact modeling, large-scale data analysis and interpretation, and independent research is required. Strong communication skills and a publication record appropriate to career stage are preferred, along with expertise in atmosphere-ocean interactions, atmospheric feature tracking, extreme event analysis, and regional weather or hydrodynamic models.
Funding: This is a full-time paid postdoctoral position with a salary range of $65,000–$75,000, subject to qualifications and available department or grant funds. Rutgers also provides employee benefits to eligible staff.
Location: Rutgers University–New Brunswick, New Brunswick, New Jersey, United States.
