About this position
The postdoctoral associate will join the Kehn-Hall Lab at Virginia Tech to work at the intersection of virology, antiviral discovery, and data-driven biology. The project focuses on emerging viruses with pandemic potential, including Rift Valley fever virus, Venezuelan equine encephalitic virus, and eastern equine encephalitis virus.
The successful candidate will investigate how FDA-approved drugs can be repurposed to target dysregulated pathways and proteins in virally infected cells. A key part of the work is the integration of published omics datasets with machine learning to nominate candidate compounds for further testing.
The role also includes developing liver and/or brain organoid cultures, including iPSC-based organoids, and evaluating candidate drugs in organoid systems and animal models of infection. The initial emphasis is on Rift Valley fever virus, with the possibility of extending the work to additional emerging viruses.
This position is embedded in a highly collaborative environment that brings together virologists, computer scientists, and chemical engineers. The fellow is also one of six new postdoctoral hires within the NSF-funded COMPASS Center, offering opportunities to contribute to cross-disciplinary efforts aimed at preventing and controlling emerging viral diseases.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field, awarded no more than four years before the effective appointment date, with at least one year of eligibility remaining. Required experience includes working with RNA viruses, cell culture and in vitro viral techniques such as infections, plaque assays, and reverse genetics, as well as molecular and/or protein biology skills including RT-qPCR, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, DNA/RNA extractions, plasmid preparation, molecular cloning, and transfections. Candidates must be capable of receiving Security Risk Assessment approval and be able to independently organize and conduct complex experiments with minimal supervision. The advert also seeks someone enthusiastic, dedicated, detail-oriented, organized, efficient, able to follow verbal and written instructions, and able to work well with others. Preferred experience includes organoid systems, select agents in BSL-3, antiviral activity testing with CC50/EC50 determinations, immunohistochemical staining and confocal microscopy, infectious disease rodent models, and knowledge of animal technical procedure regulations.
